This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like standard body horror, but beneath Together resides a profound contemplation about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The story commences when the couple move from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force takes hold of the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He fears the concept of completely losing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
